Koumura, Gambari agree to promote democratization of Myanmar

Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Koumura has reiterated his backing for visiting UN special envoy on Myanmar, Ibrahim Gambari, in his efforts to promote democratization in Myanmar.

Mr Gambari met Mr Koumura in Tokyo on Thursday. Mr Gambari, who visits Myanmar in March, told the Japanese that Myanmar has announced its plan to establish a new constitution and hold a general election.
But, he said, the plan must be made more reliable and valid.

The UN envoy said all parties, including the pro-democracy movement leader, Aun San Suu Kyi, should be allowed to take part in the democratization process.

He expressed hopes for Japan to continue to play a key role in this regard.

Mr Koumura said various opinions on Myanmar exist in the international community, and it is important to coordinate them.

Mr Koumura said he and US State Secretary Condoleezza Rice were in complete agreement in their meeting on Wednesday in supporting Mr Gambari. (Source : NHK World news)
