Aung San Suu Kyi party criticizes referendum plan

Myanmar's opposition party led by pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has criticized the military government's plan to hold a referendum on a new constitution in May.

The National League for Democracy said in a statement on Monday that the draft constitution was written without the participation of the people's representatives and only shows that it is not heading for democratic reforms.

On February 9, the military government announced the referendum plan to replace the constitution, which was suspended in the 1988 military coup, with a new one to be followed by a general election in 2010.

The National League for Democracy says it won a landslide victory in the 1990 general election but the military government denied the result.

Ms Aung San Suu Kyi has been under house arrest.

The party says announcing the date of a general election is unilateral and does not support national reconciliation.

Some anti-government organizations and activist groups in Myanmar have already called for a boycott of the referendum, or a "no" vote to the new constitution.
