UN envoy : 31 killed in crackdown in Myanmar
A UN human rights envoy says the number of people killed in Myanmar's recent crackdown on democracy protests was twice that announced by the government.
The UN Human Rights Council's special rapporteur, Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, issued a report on Friday denouncing Myanmar's government for underestimating the number of deaths.
Mr Pinheiro entered Myanmar in mid-November and interviewed officials of the government and opposition parties about the crackdown on demonstrations by monks calling for democracy.
He also visited prisons and cemeteries.
Based on his findings, he said 31 people died, 74 remain missing, and 650 are in custody.
The government in Myanmar said 15 people died in the crackdown.
Referring to the fatal shooting of Japanese journalist Kenji Nagai, the UN envoy said it is highly likely that Mr Nagai was shot at very close range judging from video images.
Mr Pinheiro was not allowed to meet the democracy movement leader, Aung San Suu Kyi.
He expressed hope that he would be able to meet her next time he visits Myanmar.
The envoy will explain his findings to the UN Human Rights Council next week.
