Family of Japanese reporter slain in Myanmar pushes for ICC probe (Source : JAC Japan)
The family and friends of a Japanese journalist killed in Myanmar have urged the government to bring the case to the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
Mr Kenji Nagai was shot dead in September while covering a protest rally in Myanmar.
Mr Nagai's employer, Toru Yamaji of the APF news agency, made the appeal for legal action at a news conference on Sunday in Tokyo.
Mr Yamaji said Myanmar's government on Saturday sent a fax expressing its condolences for his death. However, he said it gave no information about the killer, as requested by Mr Nagai's family and friends, and nor was there any mention of returning Mr Nagai's videotapes.
Mr Yamaji said the statement was just a piece of paper that means nothing.
He also said he and Mr Nagai's family will ask the Japanese government to submit the case to the International Criminal Court.
Mr Yamaji plans to meet Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Koumura next week. He said he will demand that the Japanese government appeal to the international community over the Myanmar government's violation of human rights.
