Koumura, Gambari call for Myanmar dialogue
Japan's Foreign Minister, Masahiko Koumura, and the UN special envoy on Myanmar, Ibrahim Gambari, have agreed to press the government of Myanmar to maintain dialogue with pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

In talks in Tokyo on Friday, Mr Gambari said it is important for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and other countries including China and India to encourage the government of Myanmar to lead the country in the right direction.

He asked Japan for more material and personnel to assist ongoing UN initiatives.

Mr Koumura expressed full support for Mr Gambari's initiative for Myanmar and said Japan will positively consider extending more support.

Mr Koumura also said dialogue between Aung San Suu Kyi and the military government should be continued toward the establishment of democracy in Myanmar.
