Myanmar sees first demonstration since crackdown
In Myanmar, Buddhist monks marched through the streets, apparently without resistance, for the first time since last month's crackdown by the military government.

Witnesses say about 100 monks marched through Pakokku, a town in central Myanmar, for about an hour on Wednesday morning.

They were reportedly protesting a pro-government rally held in the town earlier in the morning, at which participants condemned monks who led last month's demonstrations.

Pakokku was the site of the first clash last month between security forces and monks, which triggered huge protests in the country's biggest city, Yangon.

But this time, the military government showed no sign of cracking down on the demonstrators.

Myanmar's leaders have come under intense international criticism for their suppression of civilian protests.

UN special envoy Ibrahim Gambari is expected to visit Myanmar again early next month to urge the country's leaders to resolve the standoff through dialogue with Aung San Suu Kyi. The pro-democracy leader remains under house arrest.
